Inside a Custom Jewelry Appointment at Greenwich St. Jewelers

A custom jewelry appointment is the beginning of a conversation. It's an opportunity to explore ideas, discover exceptional gemstones, and work alongside experienced designers, gemologists, and jewelers to create something that feels unmistakably yours.

At Greenwich St. Jewelers, we've refined our collaborative design process over decades. Every appointment is personal, thoughtful, and shaped around your style, your story, and the way you'll wear your piece.

Before You Arrive

You don't need a finished design before your first appointment. Some clients arrive with a collection of screenshots, a favorite designer's work, or a family heirloom that has inspired them for years. Others walk in with nothing more than a rough sketch on a napkin or a feeling they hope to capture in jewelry.

Before your consultation, we'll send a short questionnaire to learn more about your personal style, design preferences, and how you envision wearing your piece. That preparation gives us insight into what resonates with you, allowing the conversation to begin naturally and making room for new ideas to take shape together.

Consultations are available in person at our Tribeca boutique or virtually. Clients across the country and around the world collaborate with our team through Zoom, FaceTime, or Skype, enjoying the same thoughtful experience, regardless of location.

Our Five-Step Process

Step 1: Every Great Piece Starts With a Conversation

Every custom project begins differently. Some clients have a clear vision, while others simply know how they want a piece to feel. Both are equally valuable starting points.

We'll explore your inspiration together, review any images or sketches you've gathered, discuss design possibilities, and answer your questions along the way. Before moving ahead, we'll provide a clear quote so you understand the investment before work begins. Custom jewelry projects start at $4,500, including the design fee, while jewelry restyling projects typically begin around $600.

Step 2: Refining the Design

As ideas evolve, we translate them into detailed sketches, CAD renderings, or physical models, depending on the project. Seeing the design come to life allows you to review proportions, settings, and overall details before precious materials are selected.

Every stage is collaborative, giving you opportunities to refine the design until it feels just right.

Step 3: Selecting the Right Stone

Finding the right gemstone is one of the most exciting parts of the experience.

Our GIA Graduate Gemologists personally hand-select every diamond and gemstone, looking beyond grading reports and the traditional 4Cs. We evaluate proportion, rough quality, inclusion characteristics, and the qualities that give each stone its unique personality and beauty.

Every diamond and gemstone is responsibly sourced. Diamonds over 0.70 carats also include traceable origin information, offering greater transparency into their journey.

Many clients are surprised by how different two stones with similar specifications can appear. Seeing them side by side often reveals subtle differences that photos simply can't capture.

Step 4: Bringing the Design to Life

Once you've approved every detail, our Master Jeweler and skilled craftspeople begin creating your piece.

Each stage is completed with extraordinary care, combining traditional craftsmanship with modern precision. Stone setting, polishing, finishing, and quality inspections all receive the same thoughtful attention, resulting in jewelry designed to last a lifetime.

Step 5: A Piece That Becomes Part of Your Story

You'll review and approve the design throughout the process, so the finished piece feels familiar long before you see it in its final form.

When the moment finally arrives, you're not simply picking up jewelry. You're seeing an idea become something tangible, created specifically for you. Every custom piece is backed by our lifetime guarantee.

Bespoke Design vs. Jewelry Restyling

Every custom project starts in its own way.

Bespoke design begins with a blank canvas. You bring the inspiration, and together we'll develop every detail, selecting gemstones, precious metals, and design elements that reflect your vision.

Jewelry restyling begins with something you already treasure. An heirloom ring, inherited diamonds, loose gemstones, or jewelry that no longer suits your style can all become the foundation for something entirely new. We can also apply the recycled value of your gold or platinum toward the cost of your redesigned piece.

In both cases, you'll participate throughout the design process, creating jewelry that's one of a kind. Our craftspeople build each piece individually, offering an experience that's very different than selecting options through an online ring builder.

How Far Custom Can Go

Many people associate custom jewelry with engagement rings, but the possibilities extend much further.

We create bracelets, necklaces, earrings, rings, and meaningful personal commissions that celebrate milestones, relationships, and individual style. Inspiration can come almost anywhere.

One memorable project began with a client's favorite tattoo. Together, we translated its flowing lines into fine jewelry that felt deeply personal while remaining beautifully wearable. Projects like these remind us that meaningful design often begins with the smallest spark of inspiration.

Responsible Sourcing, Thoughtfully Considered

Every material we work with is selected with care.

Our diamonds and gemstones are responsibly sourced, and diamonds over 0.70 carats include traceable origin information. Much of the recycled gold used in our jewelry comes through SCS Certified suppliers who meet rigorous standards for responsible sourcing and verified labor practices.

It's one more way we create jewelry with intention, giving clients confidence in every detail that goes into their finished piece.

Timeline

Most custom jewelry and restyling projects are completed in approximately six to eight weeks.

The exact timing depends on the complexity of the design, gemstone sourcing, and any refinements made along the way. During your consultation, we'll outline the expected timeline for your project so you'll know what to anticipate before work begins.

Ready to Begin?

Every custom piece starts with an idea. Sometimes it's a family heirloom waiting for its next chapter. Sometimes it's a favorite piece you've always admired. Sometimes it's simply a feeling you hope to capture.

Whatever brings you through our doors, we'll guide you through a collaborative design experience that reflects your style and results in jewelry designed to last a lifetime.
